I did this little heart in Illustrator CS4 in about 10 minutes while listening in on our Sunday call to my sister in New Mexico as she coaxed a Dingo-esque dog out of her neighbors house and watching the Ohio birds in the snow play Bunker Hill with the seed-sprinkled drifts.

I am back at the Canton Art Institute inFebruary!  Our Basics class was wonderful with a great mix of people and some very creative projects.  This time, we will be learning to use and make brushes in Photoshop and Elements as well as accessing the wealth of brushes available on line and from… ME! We will be using templates and drawing freehand, we will paint and smudge, its all hands on and all fun.

Starting with a photo and ending with art

Caseys ABC

Casey Klhan (see below for his link) did this great card in our Photoshop4Artists Workshop ABC class on Dollstreet!? He had many striking paintings to choose from and this was a perfect choice for the design he created.? I love the texture and rich color, and the composition works well with the box of copy on the right.? So how did he do that?? Very simple in Photoshop!

First, open your file in Photoshop.

Next, create a new layer and with your Marque tool (Dancing Ants Tool) create a square and fill it with 50% grey

Now change the Layers Filter from Normal to Screen and play with the fill slider.? Wow, cool, eh?? You can also do this on the layer that your art lives on, but this allows you to play around indefinately without the fear of ruining your original layer.

You use any shape to make your lighter area, for instance, below I have created a layer with a 50% grey brush stroke.

This is what it looks like without the blue layer turned on and this is what it looks like with the layer showing (on!)

You could put some notes about the color blue in that space, or your grocery list – you can also fool around with the grey layer, maybe give it some soft edges by feathering, use a cool brush and distress it, add curlie-q’s, you get the idea.

She was playing around with Photoshops Filters – This one is plastic wrap… Now, who would have thought of including plastic wrap in a high end program like Photoshop… With my imagination in tact, I can go far with the idea of wrapping things in plastic wrap… hum…the 60’s… But, I have read that the most common use for the plastic wrap filter is to make things look shinny and wet. More on that in the Tips and Tricks Section!

Paulette Carr Fiber Artist ABC

Paulette Carr has done a wonderful job of layering with her ABC.? Great Job Paula!? Paulette’s doll face is a thoughtful? contrast to the digitized background.? This program is particularity versatile when it comes to college work.
