…but I cant even draw a circle!

Ah… Me neither, or at least not unless I am in a massively zen mood.

Mark Mitchell is a great children’s book illustrator and writer whom I follow on his blog: “How To Be A Children’s Book Illustrator”  He mentioned on his blog the NY Times Blog was hosting a drawing bit by James McMullan, an artist I was aware of because of this poster for Six Degrees of Separation

I am blogging on this particular article in my Photoshop blog because of this quote:

“The ellipse is the Frisbee of art, the circle freed from its flatness that sails out into imagined space tilting this way and that and ending up on the top of the soup bowl and silver cup in Jean-Baptiste Chardin’s still life or, imagine this, on the wheels of the speeding Batmobile.”

Check out this ellipse article

Mark writes the following note and provides links to all of the articles.  Thanks Mark!  Students (and art friends) Read!
Here are 12 wonderful, illustrated articles
about the basics of “the lost art” of drawing — ripped
from the “New York Times” Opinion Pages.

They’re presented by James McMullan, the great designer and
illustrator of theater posters and children’s books who
teaches drawing at the New York School of Visual Arts.

The series “LINE BY LINE” begins with installments on line,
perspective proportion and structure and continues
from there, using examples from art history to
illuminate specific issues.

Pencil and paper are recommended.
